Come From Away began in 2013, created by Canadian writing team Irene Sankoff and David Hein. Inspired by the true events in Gander, Newfoundland, after the September 11 attacks, they gathered hundreds of interviews from residents and stranded passengers, weaving them into a fast-paced, music-driven celebration of human kindness.
The show premiered at Sheridan College in Ontario before moving through acclaimed productions in La Jolla, Seattle, Toronto and Washington D.C. In 2017, it opened on Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, earning seven Tony Award nominations and winning Best Direction of a Musical (Christopher Ashley). It also received the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical and London’s Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
Since then, Come From Away has toured globally, with productions in North America, Australia, and beyond, including a filmed Broadway version released in 2021. From its Canadian beginnings to worldwide acclaim, the show continues to remind audiences that even in the darkest times, kindness can change the world.
We were proud to present the West Midlands amateur premiere of this remarkable musical, and we hope you enjoyed it.
